Privacy Policy
Your documents stay yours
BoringPDF is built so your files never reach us. This policy explains what happens to your documents, what the optional AI Assistant shares, what is saved in your browser, and what our analytics measure.
Last updated October 12, 2026
The short version
- Your PDF files are processed on your own device. They are never uploaded to BoringPDF.
- There are no accounts, so we don't hold an account email address or document history for you.
- The optional AI Assistant sends extracted text only to the AI provider you choose, and only when you press Send.
- We collect website usage information to improve BoringPDF. Your files and their contents are excluded.
- We don't sell your data, and we don't run advertising trackers.
Your files
When you use a PDF tool, your browser reads the file and does all of the processing on your device. Your documents, passwords, signatures, extracted text and the files you download are never sent to BoringPDF. We have no server that receives documents, so there is nothing for us to store, view or delete.
To run, your browser downloads the BoringPDF app and, for some tools, processing engines, fonts or OCR language data. These downloads are the same for everyone and never contain your files or their contents.
The AI Assistant
Summarize PDF and Chat with PDF are optional. They work with an AI provider you select: Google Gemini, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Groq, OpenCode Go, or a custom endpoint you configure. When you press Send, your browser sends the following directly to that provider:
- text extracted from the pages you selected (the tool shows how much will be sent before you send it);
- your question or instruction; and
- up to six recent messages from the same conversation, for context.
Your original PDF file is not sent, and none of this passes through BoringPDF. OpenRouter may forward the request to the model provider you pick there. How the provider processes, stores and bills for your request is governed by your agreement with that provider, so review its privacy policy before sending sensitive documents.
API keys
Your API key is sent only to the provider it belongs to. It is never sent to BoringPDF, never logged, and never included in diagnostics.
By default the key is kept in memory and is forgotten when you leave or reload the AI tool. If you turn on Remember this key, it is encrypted (AES-GCM) and stored in your browser so all BoringPDF AI tools can use it until you remove it. Encryption protects the stored key, but it can't protect against malware already running on your device.
What's stored in your browser
Some features save data in your browser's local storage so it's there next time. This data stays on your device and is never sent to us:
- signatures you create, so you can reuse them;
- custom workflows you create;
- AI conversations, so you can reopen them (attached files are not saved);
- remembered API keys, if you turn that option on; and
- small preferences, such as recently used colors.
You can remove saved items from within each tool, or clear everything at once by clearing this site's data in your browser settings. Closing an AI conversation does not remove a remembered key; remove it from the key manager instead.
Analytics and cookies
We use website analytics to understand visits, traffic sources and tool usage, and to improve reliability. This includes the pages and tools you use, run outcomes, download interactions, campaign information, approximate location and general browser and device information.
Analytics uses a random browser identifier stored in local storage to recognize repeat visits. This identifier is separate from your documents. We never collect file names, document contents, extracted text, prompts, AI responses, passwords or API keys through analytics.
Browser privacy signals and tracker blockers may limit analytics. All PDF tools continue to work when analytics is unavailable. You can remove the stored identifier by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
Hosting
Like any website, BoringPDF is delivered by a hosting provider that processes standard technical information, such as your IP address and browser type, to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. This never includes your documents.
Changes to this policy
If how BoringPDF handles data changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top. See also our Terms of Service.
