PDF tools that keep your files on your device

BoringPDF is a free set of PDF tools that runs entirely in your web browser. Your documents are processed on your own computer, so they're never uploaded to us or anyone else.

Why we built it

Most online PDF tools upload your document to a server, process it there, and send it back. For almost every everyday job (merging, splitting, compressing, converting) that round trip isn't necessary. Modern browsers are fast enough to do the work themselves.

So BoringPDF does exactly that. Your contracts, bank statements and ID scans stay on your computer, and you don't have to take anyone's word for what happens to them on a server you can't see.

How it works

  1. You open a tool. Your browser loads the BoringPDF app. Heavier tools, like Office conversion or OCR, also download a processing engine the first time you use them.
  2. You add a file. It's read directly by your browser. There's no upload step.
  3. Your device does the work. Processing happens on your own computer or phone.
  4. You download the result. The new file is created on your device and saved wherever you choose. Your original file is never changed.

35 free tools for organizing pages, reducing file size, converting to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images, editing, signing, password protection, redaction, OCR and comparing documents. You can also chain tools together into reusable workflows.

The optional AI Assistant

Summarize PDF and Chat with PDF are the only tools that involve another company. They use an AI provider that you choose (such as Google Gemini or OpenAI) with your own API key.

Before anything is sent, BoringPDF extracts the text on your device and shows you exactly what will be shared. The text goes straight from your browser to that provider, never through BoringPDF, and your PDF file itself is never uploaded. If you don't use these two tools, nothing about your documents leaves your device.

Why “boring”?

Because a PDF tool should be. You should open it, get the job done, and move on: no pop-ups, no surprises, no wondering where your file went. As it should be.
